Under the copper leaf gilding of a crescent moon Whalecester has evolved as a society on the back of a whale--living in symbiosis with the water and the whale. The buildings are constructed out of copper with little tie downs for stability. This is a people that know the value of their host and work hard to coexist.
The whale is hand carved into the wood panel using a Dremel tool. Then by using sponges and brushes I am able to get the pastel colors to blend with the wood grain. The copper buildings are cut out and then placed in groupings by scale. The windows are then painted with acrylics to give the indication of lights on or off.
Mixed medium. Resin and copper on carved wood. Framed. 49” x 49”

A mystical realm in the land of childhood dreams. When I was young, I would stare at the sky and imagine what living in the clouds would look like if that were a real possibility. How lovely it would be to bounce from cloud to cloud or to be close enough to touch the stars. This piece explores that notion with the castle carved into the wood panel. Its gleaming gilded rooftops and mirrored doors and windows allow for it become invisible.
Floating on a cloud of poured resin, Castle Cloud is carved into a wood panel. Copper nails as stars, mirrors for windows and a gilded moon reminds you of that whimsical feeling of childhood when you would imagine living in a cloud.

What if forests were full of hollow trees? What if entire societies existed within each tree? Cities would exist vertically with bridges and stair ways to connect different levels. In a way it parallels the life cycle of bee colonies. It was a way of thinking deeper about the way we as a society treat our host (whether it be tree or planet) and considers how long we can survive without taking care of it.
The civilizations of Hollowood exist inside the carved hollows of living trees. Hand drawn on sheets of copper, the cities are stacked and connected via bridges and stairways

Imagine evolving into a society that not only lived but thrives inside a volcano. The hand poured resin lava flows through the land, while the society itself is cut into the clay of the interior walls of the volcano. Drawn onto copper sheets the homes of this society have big picture windows that allow for them to look out into their small world.
Mixed medium. Copper, clay, and poured resin on wood. No frame. 48” x 48”

This universe is made up solely of coastal caves. Nothing but the sea and rocky coasts the whole planet over. When my world was feeling its darkest, this society came into my mind. What if we could only exist within the darkness of a cave? This piece allowed for me to work through my own insecurities and fears of 2020.
In this cove there does dwell a society of pyrite miners. They live in the carved out cave to mine their own fortunes. They've built their own modes of transport out of copper wire, carved into the wood panel. The poured resin gives movement to the sea while the carved lines of the cliff faces in the wood panel bring out the elevations of this small world.
Mixed medium. Copper, clay, and poured resin on wood. No frame. 48” x 48”

Colorado, a state that is defined by the mountain range that runs through it. Therefore, when outlining all the rivers and tributaries, Colorado’s state lines become less recognizable, generating a feeling of wonder and adventure in the most familiar of places. This exploration resulted in a complex series of crossings and movement throughout the work.
Mixed medium. Copper nails and copper wire on wood. Framed 49”x49”.

My art is a testament of my unique introduction into being an artist – using my love of texture and stories to illustrate moments.
These moments come together in the form of the texture of the copper wire and nails. This allows for the expression of how the rivers and waterways interact with state lines, creating a pathway of life for each state. These materials tell the story of how a state like Louisiana becomes recognizable with its rivers defining its boundaries. While Louisiana is relatively flat, the waterways help define the topography of the state.

Books convey their own kind of magic to the reader. V.E. Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic brings to life the ideas of weaving magic through time and space. The red thread illustrates how the magic of the main character follows the pathways of London’s medieval city streets; crossing all four colors representing each unique universe.

The circus comes in the middle of the night without warning bringing with it a dreamlike magnetism. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern spins tales of romance and has an underground following only discernable by their small show of red. The use of clay to emphasize an important tree and glossy red vinyl to stress other trees are vital visuals that bring the magical circus to life on the canvas.

In a galaxy far, far away, the battle for good against evil persists. George Lucas created a universe that thrives on conquering evil and exploring the unknown. It was important to use resin and plaster mixed with sand and color to achieve a clear but recognizable planet. Adding multiple, various colored moons creates the distinction between the known, earth, and an unknown planet in an unexplored universe.

The Aquaman comic series appear in my imagination with visions of surreal landscapes and fantastic underwater creatures. That’s why the use of glow in the dark acrylic paint was so important on the giant squid and pieces of coral. It highlights the surreal elements of the underwater universe brought to life by the comic book series.

The beauty of literature is that every story lets the reader create a world that exists in their own imagination. There is an energy that erupts around that moment. Moments like when I read the story Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and felt heart-wrenching love for the main characters. In this piece I explore how those characters would transform into a landscape.
